Since I am a jobless teenager, I have very little funds to go about doing social activities. I do my best to make due with the money I come across, but mostly do my best to sell on Etsy. Unfortunately, people are generally more receptive and apt to purchase work based on things they know rather than what is unique and original.
So I cater to them. A frequent movie-goer, I watch all sorts o things. Seeing no other Necronomicons on the market, I made one. It was a sure sale—a true double whammy. Those that were fond of H.P. Lovecraft’s work would see it as the Book of the Dead, those that are fond of the cult classic Evil Dead series will see it as the book in the second installation.
Imitation is the best form of flattery, after all.
Not to toot my own horn, but apparently I do a damn good imitation. The guy who invented the design of the original book thought so.
Long story short, I was contacted this morning with the threat of being sued. It’s shocking, really. I had to take down and refund a couple of these that I sold, so I guess I’m stuck with two of these journals.
It was a less than fun start to the new year, to say the least.
I’m doing my best to take it as flattery.
- I replicated a professional design well enough to be sued for it.
- He said “Your group are talented” at the end of his complaint email.
- He felt so threatened by me he didn’t complain to Etsy, but to his attorney first.
